In addition to the iPhone 12 series, Apple also introduced the brand new MagSafe charging technology. The magnet-based charger can charge the new smartphone series twice as fast as conventional Qi charging stations. But there is a catch.

The entire MagSafe technology introduced by Apple, which is being introduced with the iPhone 12 series, is currently being criticized more than praised. This also applies to the brand new MagSafe charger. According to Apple, it can supply the iPhone 12 models with up to 15W charging power. Conventional charging stations deliver a maximum of 7.5W. The accessory costs 43.85 euros in this country and is delivered without a power supply. At first glance, that shouldn't be a problem, right?

iPhone 12 & MagSafe: Apple's 20W charger is required

After all, most users have more than one power adapter lying around. But it has now been discovered that anyone who wants to get the full performance of the MagSafe charger must buy the new 20W power adapter, which Apple is offering for an additional 24.35 euros. Neither existing 18W chargers nor, for example, power adapters for MacBook devices can get the most out of the MagSafe. This is what YouTuber Aaron Zollo noted. Zollo tested several third-party power adapters as well as Apple's own. In the end, it turned out that to achieve maximum charging speed with the MagSafe charger and an iPhone 12, Apple's 20W power adapter is required.

iPhone 12 & MagSafe: The case must also go

The tests also revealed that the company uses aggressive temperature control, so that the charging power tends to stay below 10W as soon as the iPhone heats up. The best charging speeds are only achieved when the iPhone is connected to the MagSafe without a case, as the device can dissipate heat better without a case. Whether this is the case for the Paragraph It remains to be seen whether the MagSafe will benefit the iPhone 12. Previous tests have already shown that although the MagSafe is compatible with older iPhone devices, it charges them much slower than a conventional Qi charging station. The conclusion is that anyone who wants to use a MagSafe charger needs an iPhone 12 and the brand new 20W charger from Apple. In addition, the case should always be removed when charging. (Image: via Filip Chudzinski)
