M1 Macs can run up to six displays

While almost all aspects of M1 Mac performance have been greatly improved compared to its Intel Mac predecessors, one drawback is reduced support for external displays. But this seems to look a little different than Apple itself claims.

In the technical data, Apple states that the M1 MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro only support one external display with up to 6K at 60Hz. The brand new Mac mini, on the other hand, supports a 6K monitor via USB-C/Thunderbolt or optionally a 4K display with 6Hz via HDMI. But apparently the devices can support significantly more displays at the same time, as has now become known. According to this, it is possible to connect up to six monitors. YouTuber Ruslan Tulupov has published two videos (via MacRumors) that prove this.

M1 Macs have done a "fantastic" job

The workaround isn't too complicated and involves downloading the DisplayLink software for macOS (note: Tulupov explained it works well with Big Sur) and using a 4K DisplayPort to USB 3.0 adapter (and/or HDMI adapter). Depending on how many displays the user wants to drive with this trick, a USB-C to USB-A 3.0 adapter or a Thunderbolt or USB-C dock and additional cables may be needed. According to Tulupov's test results, the M1 Mac mini can drive up to six monitors while the MacBook Air supports five external displays. According to the YouTuber, the devices did a "fantastic" job.
