Apple supplier TSMC caught a virus in software for new machines. Production was stopped.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is the third largest chip manufacturer in the world. The company announced that several systems and production facilities were paralyzed by a virus on August 3. TSMC was able to quickly identify the problem and resolve it. 80% of the affected facilities have been running again since yesterday. Full production capacity should probably be reached today.
The letter shows that the company's management does not believe it was a hacker attack, as no sensitive data was stolen. The virus entered the company network after software for new devices was installed. TSMC informed the majority of its customers and let them know that delivery dates would be met as far as possible.
Customers include Apple, Qualcomm, Nvidia, AMD, Conexant, Marvel, VIA and Broadcom.
