iPhone 14 Pro models get improved GPS accuracy

The new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offer dual-frequency GPS support for more accurate location tracking, according to Apple's specifications.

Like the Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone 14 Pro models can receive signals from GPS satellites operating on both the old L1 frequency and the modernized L5 frequency. L5 satellites send a more modern, more powerful signal that can better overcome obstacles such as buildings and trees compared to L1 signals. By combining the two signals, the iPhone 14 Pro models will have better location accuracy in apps like Maps.

According to the US government, there were 17 satellites in orbit broadcasting L5 signals in June. In combination with L1, L5 will Declarations the US government "provide users with the most advanced civilian GPS signal worldwide." Although L5 has been in use since 2010, the signal is not yet operational, according to the government. The standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus do not support dual-frequency GPS, according to Apple's specifications. All four iPhone 14 models continue to support other navigation systems, including GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, and BeiDou. Anyone interested in one of the new devices can officially pre-order.
