iPhone 13: Dual eSIM support, battery life & more

Apple has now officially unveiled the iPhone 13 series and introduced some new features. Below we have summarized a few interesting features that were not mentioned during the event.

In addition to the two cheaper iPhone 13 models, Apple also introduced the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Interesting innovations were added. However, some of them also have limitations. Let's get started.

You have gained weight

In recent years, Apple has been motivated to build lighter and thinner iPhones. The trend is now coming to an end with the iPhone 13, as the number of devices has increased. A consequence of the Corona pandemic? Okay, I'm getting off track. However, compared to the iPhone 12 series, the new models are definitely thicker and heavier:

  • iPhone 13 mini: 140 grams – for comparison: iPhone 12 mini: 135 grams
  • iPhone 13: 173 grams – for comparison: iPhone 12: 164 grams
  • iPhone 13 Pro: 203 grams – for comparison: iPhone 12 Pro: 189 grams
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: 238 grams – for comparison: iPhone 12 Pro Max: 228 grams

In terms of thickness, all iPhone 12 models are 0.29 inches (7.4 mm) thick while the 13 Pro models are 0.30 inches (7.65 mm).

iPhone 13: Notch, battery life and more

As for the notch, the iPhone 13's notch is 20 % smaller in width but slightly larger in height. The difference in height is small, maybe 1 mm larger, but it is clearly visible in Apple's product images. Will everyone like it? Other interesting details include the following:

  • Dual eSIM support: Apple says the iPhone 13 models support dual SIM, meaning both regular SIM and eSIM as “Dual eSIM,” as the company calls it. This allows users to easily activate two different providers with the eSIM.
  • Cinematic Mode: One of the greatest features of the new iPhone is Cinematic Mode, which allows you to shoot videos with a shallow depth of field. The problem with this is that users can only record at 1080p at 30 fps.
  • Limiting ProRes recording: Apple says it will support ProRes recording by the end of the year, but the company will limit Pro devices with only 128GB of storage to 1080p at 30 fps.
  • Longer battery life: Apple stated that the battery life on all iPhone 13 models is longer than the previous models. But if you compare the audio playback on the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 Pro Max, there is a difference of 15 hours. The 12 can provide up to 80 hours of audio playback while the successor can provide up to 95 hours of audio playback. Extensive battery testing will of course follow over time.

All four versions can be pre-ordered from Apple starting Friday, September 17th. Delivery is scheduled to begin on September 24th. You can find more information about the new iPhone models below. (Image: Apple)
