iPad Pro 2020: What critics say

Apple introduced new iPad Pro models early last week presentedThe first reviews have now been published.

Considering that all modern iPad models will receive trackpad support under iPadOS 13.4, the new iPad Pro is not receiving as much attention as some expected. The technical difference from its predecessor is very small - except for the camera with the LiDAR scanner. The reviews also confirm that the performance of the new A12Z Bionic chip has a very similar CPU performance as the previous A12X chip. Accordingly, there are hardly any differences in terms of performance. But The Verge Journalist Dieter Bohn notes that the LiDAR scanner is, despite everything, more than just a vision of the future.

As I used the iPad Pro this week, I kept coming back to the LiDAR sensor. It's a powerful and interesting sensor, and Apple's total control over software and hardware means it 'just works' to enhance existing apps. But as powerful as it is, I'm not sure many users will be able to take advantage of it - it's an extra thing they might not even use.

"improved thermal architecture"

Applications that rely on ARKit will of course benefit from this. For example, motion detection will be significantly better and calculations will be faster. Anyone who uses corresponding apps will certainly be pleased. But the importance of the LiDAR scanner will only increase in the next few years. Regarding the A12Z Bionic chip, Apple explained to Lauren Goode that WIREDthat it has an improved thermal architecture, which means that the chip does not get as hot when it reaches its limits. The statements from the other media houses are broadly similar. Anyone who has an older device and is thinking about an upgrade should go for it with a clear conscience. Users of the iPad Pro 2018 series, on the other hand, should think carefully about the whole thing. The new iPad Pro is available in 11- and 12.9-inch sizes with 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB in space gray or silver. While the 11-inch model is available from 879 euros, the 12.9-inch starts at 1,099 euros. Both devices can be purchased from Apple's online shop. (Image: Apple)
