iOS 27: Code reveals locking mechanism for leased iPhones

A discovery in the iOS 27 beta reveals how Apple might handle leased iPhones in the future when payments cease. The code describes a "Restricted Mode" that largely disables the device – and a new lock that renders a factory reset ineffective.

The timing of this discovery is no coincidence: Just on the same day, a new financing model called "Apple Upgrade" was announced, which will allow Apple to offer hardware via leasing with lower monthly payments. The technical foundation for this now appears to be embedded in the code of the iOS 27 beta – a system that can manage a financed iPhone and restrict its use if payments are missed. The discovery in the distributed beta code is confirmed; when and where Apple will activate the system remains to be seen.

What the code describes

At its core is a framework called "App Managed Features." It allows an authorized financing or provider app to register an iPhone and continuously monitor its status. If a contract is no longer valid, Apple's system services can put the device into a "Restricted Mode," which blocks access to most apps until the outstanding payment or contract issue is resolved.

The code does not specify how many missed payments will trigger the device to be locked. This decision rests with the financing partner's app, which determines when the device is locked according to its own rules.

Which apps remain usable when the device is locked?

An iPhone in Restricted Mode is not completely unusable. The code maintains a fixed list of apps that remain accessible – including Phone, Clock, Settings, the Health app, Wallet, passwords, the App Store, Magnifying Glass, accessibility features like Accessibility Reader, and the Restricted Mode interface itself.

Apps that can send critical warnings will also remain accessible – such as news apps, the home app, and certain medication and security apps. However, the provider appears to retain some control over these exceptions. One detail is likely to be particularly frustrating for affected users: the code neither cancels nor pauses subscriptions to blocked apps. A subscription could therefore continue and incur charges while access to the associated app is blocked.

Partner Finance Lock: Resetting won't help

Additionally, the framework introduces a new type of activation lock, the "Partner Finance Lock." It's designed to prevent a locked device from being erased, resold, or dismantled. Technically, the lock is integrated into "Find My" - the feature normally used to locate lost Apple devices, AirTags, and objects.

Important: According to the code, the financing partner does not have access to the device's location. The connection serves solely to maintain the lock even if the iPhone is erased or reset. A factory reset will therefore not remove the lock.

What the discovery means for the DACH region

Since the frameworks are part of iOS 27, they will be rolled out to iPhones worldwide with the update – including in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. However, nothing will activate automatically: the system only starts working after registration by an authorized financing partner.

The code references were not yet found in yesterday's iOS 26.6 RC. Apple will likely either add the underlying functionality with the final iOS 26.6 version or launch "Apple Upgrade" later. Since everything is based on the current beta version, details may still change before completion – however, the references described are definitely present in the current code.
