The launch of iOS 18 brings an interesting innovation to video recording on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. For the first time, third-party apps can use spatial video recording, greatly expanding the possibilities for creative and professional video productions. This feature was previously limited to Apple's built-in Camera app, but iOS 18 removes this limitation.

Apple unveiled exciting news at WWDC 2024: A new API allows developers to integrate spatial video recording into their camera apps. This means you no longer have to rely on Apple's standard camera app to capture videos with impressive 3D depth. The enhancements in iOS 18 open up new creative possibilities and significantly improve the user experience.

iOS 18: Introduction of the API for third-party developers

In a recent WWDC 2024 coding session, Apple announced the release of an API that allows developers to integrate spatial video recording into their apps. This API is embedded in existing camera-related frameworks, making implementation easy for developers. This means you'll soon find a variety of apps in the App Store that support this exciting new feature.

Technical details of spatial video recording

When you hold your iPhone 15 Pro in landscape mode, the main and ultra-wide cameras work together to use spatial video recording technology. These cameras work in sync to capture videos with 3D depth that can be played back on Apple's new Vision Pro headset. This feature is particularly useful for creating immersive content, whether for personal use or professional applications.

Future developments and compatibility

Apple also plans to extend spatial video recording to the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models, as well as the regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models. This is especially exciting because the rear cameras on these devices are rumored to be vertically aligned, which could improve spatial video recording even further.

Use of spatial videos

To really enjoy the extra depth in the spatial videos, you need a Vision Pro. These videos are displayed in a normal 2D format when played on an iPhone. However, the Vision Pro gives you an unparalleled experience by bringing out the 3D depth of the videos to their full potential. Looking for new accessories?
