New clues have surfaced in the latest beta version of iOS 18.6 about a previously unannounced Apple product. It's a smart display for home use—a device that fits into Apple's smart home strategy and will potentially run its own operating system. The beta code contains clear indications that Apple is continuing to pursue the project, even though it hasn't been publicly announced yet.
For some time now, there have been rumors about a Smart Display from Apple that would feature Siri as the central control element. Originally, a spring presentation was planned, but the launch has apparently been delayed – presumably due to Siri's known weaknesses. Nevertheless, there are now new developments: Assets have been found in the iOS 18.6 beta that could affect precisely this product (via 9to5mac ).
Asset in beta code reveals technical details
The file in question is named:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProgressUI.framework/apple-logo-1088@2x~home.png.
This contains several clues. The suffix ~home indicates that this asset is only loaded under the "homeOS" platform. Apple has used this name internally several times when referring to new smart home hardware. This could indicate that the new device is based on a variant of tvOS or iOS – codenamed homeOS.
- The second interesting part is the number in the filename: "1088@2x." Most of the Apple logos in this directory are scaled to specific screen sizes. One example is apple-logo-2532, which refers to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14's resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels. Interpreting the 1088 at 2x scaling results in a horizontal screen resolution of 2176 pixels.
Comparison with known devices
The iPad mini has a screen resolution of 2266 x 1488 pixels and a display size of 8.3 inches. If Apple uses a similar pixel density for the Smart Display as in the iPad mini, the new device could also be in the same size range – around 8 inches. However, there is a contradiction: Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported that the planned Smart Display will have a 7-inch screen. With the same resolution, this would mean a lower pixel density. But that's not unusual, because a device like a Smart Display is usually viewed from a distance – unlike an iPad, which is held directly in the hand. Fewer pixels per inch also mean lower production costs.

This could ensure that the device is offered at a significantly lower price than the iPad mini, which is currently available starting at €599. For Apple, the new Smart Display would therefore represent a more affordable entry into the smart home ecosystem – with higher margins and a larger target audience.
What about the release date?
The new information from iOS 18.6 doesn't allow us to conclude when Apple will actually unveil the device. However, it does clearly show that Apple is working on the product and developing it further. The market launch likely depends on the progress of Siri, as sophisticated voice control appears to be central to the device.
Apple stays on the ball with the smart home display
The new asset in the iOS 18.6 beta code provides concrete clues about an upcoming smart display from Apple. The screen resolution is predictable, the operating system appears to be "homeOS," and the size is likely between 7 and 8 inches. Technically, it will be similar to the iPad mini, but will likely have a lower pixel density and be offered at a lower price. Even though the device hasn't been officially announced yet, one thing is clear: Apple is working on it—and it's likely only a matter of time before it's unveiled. (Image: Shutterstock / RossHelen)
