iOS 17.5 beta 2 is now available and brings some significant changes and improvements for iPhone users, especially in the European Union. This update is an important step by Apple to respond to regulatory requirements while improving the user experience. Below, you'll find out everything you need to know about the latest features and adjustments in this beta version.

Since the release of iOS 17, Apple has been working continuously to refine and improve the operating system. With the second beta of iOS 17.5, we see Apple responding to feedback and introducing new features tailored to user needs. This update focuses heavily on integrating new EU regulations, but also offers a number of improvements that will benefit all users.

App downloads from websites (EU only)

With iOS 17.5 Beta 2 developers can now distribute their apps directly through their own websites in the EUThis feature offers an alternative to the App Store and allows developers to market their applications independently. To be eligible, developers must have been active in the Apple Developer Program for at least two years and have recorded over one million initial installations in the previous year. All apps downloaded from websites must still go through a certification process by Apple, whereby Apple does not charge a commission but a Core Technology Fee of EUR 0.50 per app.

iOS 17.5 Beta 2: Code changes and third-party trackers

The beta also includes code changes that hint at new features that may be coming later. Most notably, support for third-party item trackers, developed in conjunction with Google, is designed to notify users of and give them control over unwanted tracking attempts.

FaceTime and iPad battery status

The beta hints at new FaceTime features and a battery status menu for the iPad that could provide similar information to the iPhone. These features are not active yet, but hint at future additions.

New Apple Pencil

Furthermore, the code of iOS 17.5 Beta 2 contains references to a new Apple Pencil with a “squeeze” function that offers new operating options.
