At the beginning of the year, Facebook confirmed the dark mode for its own application on iPhone and other devices. But nothing of the sort has been introduced to date. While Facebook remains silent on the subject, hints about the development have now been discovered in the code.
Dark Mode – also known as dark mode – on Facebook has been requested by fans for a long time. Although the company has confirmed the feature, a specific time frame for its possible release has never been given. Details on development have also been lacking. Computer science student and hacker Jane Manchun Wong has now written on her blog that she has found references to a dark mode in the code of the Facebook app. She made the discovery in the Android version of the application. Wong is known for filtering out unreleased features in various social media apps and leaking test phases. Just recently, she drew attention to the upcoming "Snooze" feature for Twitter – this allows users to temporarily hide notifications.
A chance discovery
Her latest discovery—Dark Mode in Facebook—is said to already be in a testing phase. The code suggests so, at least, Wong writes. "I came across this unreleased Dark Mode in Facebook's mobile app for Android while taking a closer look at the code, which suggests that Facebook recently began implementing the long-awaited Dark Mode in their mobile app.
Dark mode appears to be in an early stage of development. Currently, only certain parts of the app have been reworked to support dark mode. For example, when dark text is displayed on a dark background and vice versa," says Wong. The computer science student emphasizes that it's not possible to predict a release timeline.
Dark Mode in Facebook Messenger – how it works
Dark Mode in Facebook Messenger appeared in April of this year and is very popular. It was added to the app around a month before its official launch and could be activated using a simple trick. Anyone who wants to use dark mode in Facebook Messenger can switch it on or off at any time. Clicking on the profile picture in the top left corner of Messenger takes you to the controls for the function. Facebook promised at the time that the feature would also be included in the web version, but did not give an exact date.
