In a press release, smart home manufacturer Netatmo introduced a new HomeKit-compatible NFC smart door lock.

According to the announcement, the new Netatmo NFC Smart Door Lock will be delivered with three physical keys so that you can enter the door in the traditional way if necessary. But the whole thing can also be recoded to use Bluetooth or NFC. To increase the security factor, the system only uses Bluetooth and NFC - there is no connection to the Internet. Access authorizations and identification data are stored locally. The press release states:

The door lock works via Bluetooth, so it is not connected to the Internet. It uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to interact with the smart keys, which are tamper-proof and cannot be duplicated. If the keys are lost or stolen, access to the house is still secure: users can deactivate them in real time with a click on their smartphone without having to replace the entire door lock.

Additional NFC keys can also be added via the associated application. However, Netatmo goes one step further and offers the option of configuring an NFC key so that it can be used in several Netatmo NFC Smart door locks - if the user so wishes.

HomeKit integration enables connection to other devices

Each of these new door locks requires four AAA batteries and offers a two-year battery life - according to the manufacturer. Users are also warned several times in the app about a low battery level - but if someone ignores or forgets to change the battery, the door lock can be temporarily supplied with power via a micro USB port. Thanks to the HomeKit integration, Apple users benefit from additional features. For example, the door lock can be connected to other intelligent smart home devices. One example would be the lights turning on automatically when the door is opened. The new Netamo NFC Smart Door Lock will debut in Europe at the end of 2020. A price has not yet been announced.
