Apple Watch sales ban: Apple's fight for the US market

Apple Watch sales ban

STRASBOURG, FRANCE - SEP 21, 2018: Apple Store with customers people buying admiring the new latest Watch Series 4 wearable smartwatch - wide view of the retail computer store with curious people

The Apple Watch, a popular wearable device from Apple, is currently the focus of a controversy in the United States. The Biden administration recently decided to maintain the ban on the sale of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and the Apple Watch Series 9. According to this, US President Joe Biden will not take action against it.

The Apple Watch has become an indispensable companion for millions of people around the world in recent years. With features that support health, fitness and wellness, the smartwatch has established itself as a permanent fixture in everyday life. But in the US, the availability of the latest models, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9, has been discontinued due to a decision by the International Trade Commission (ITC). This is now leading to decisive action by Apple to get the watches back into the hands of customers. The ITC decision that led to the sales ban was based on patent infringement. Apple was accused of infringing patents owned by Masimo, a manufacturer of medical measuring devices. The ITC decided that the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 can no longer be sold in the US, while the Apple Watch SE remains available.

Apple speaks out

This was a heavy blow for Apple, as the Series 9 and Ultra 2 are considered flagship models. In an official statement (via 9to5mac), Apple was combative. A company spokesperson emphasized that Apple "works tirelessly to develop products and services that positively impact users' lives." This commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction is pushing Apple to fight the ITC's decision. The company has already appealed the decision and promises to "take all necessary measures to return the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to our customers in the United States as quickly as possible."

This underscores Apple's determination to bring the watches back to market. In this effort, Apple is pursuing a wide range of legal and technical options. According to reports, Apple engineers are working on software that could circumvent the controversial Masimo patents. However, Masimo itself has stressed that a pure software fix is not enough and changes to the Apple Watch's hardware are necessary. This raises the question of how Apple will overcome the hurdles to lift the sales bans.

Apple Watch sales ban: Will Apple overcome the challenges?

The Biden administration's decision to uphold the ban on the sale of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 has put Apple in a battle to restore market access for its flagship models. The company "strongly" opposes the decision and is working hard on technical and legal solutions to get the devices back into the hands of its US customers. The future of the Apple Watch in the US thus remains exciting and is being followed with interest by many. Apple customers and enthusiasts can be excited to see how Apple overcomes the challenges and whether the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 will soon be available again in the US. In the meantime, the Apple Watch SE remains available as an alternative to meet users' health and fitness needs. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphoto)
