The Apple Watch Series 4 has often turned out to be a real lifesaver in recent months. This was also the case in the most recent case. The fall detection of the current Apple Watch generation helped an 87-year-old woman after a traffic accident.

The ECG functionality the Apple Watch Series 4 has already proven to be incredibly useful for many people. But the fall detection of the popular smartwatch should not be underestimated either. It has a special fall detection system that triggers an alarm when it detects sudden movements that indicate a fall. In such a case, the warning "It looks like you have had a bad fall" is displayed. The person affected can respond with "I fell, but I'm fine" or "Call emergency services". If a one-minute period of immobility occurs after such a fall, the Apple Watch Series 4 will start a 15-second countdown and then automatically notify the emergency services and emergency contact.

Help after a traffic accident

Now it has been revealed that the feature probably saved the life of an 87-year-old woman after a car accident. As described by the local newspaper, Dotty White was involved in a car accident on her way home. Immediately after the collision, the 87-year-old could not reach her phone to call emergency services - this task was taken over by her Apple Watch. The smartwatch registered the accident as a serious fall and thus triggered the fall detection function to get help. "The watch notified the emergency services, my son in Florida and my daughter in Massachusetts as well as my other daughter in Maine," said White. "So everyone knew something had happened and they knew where it happened." In the end, Dotty White suffered a few broken bones and shock as a result of the accident - but she is grateful for the help her Apple Watch provided. "It's pretty nice just to have it on your wrist," the woman told the press.

How to enable fall detection on Apple Watch Series 4

First, the function must be switched on. This happens automatically for people over the age of 65. The useful feature can be activated in the Watch app under Emergency SOS - provided you have an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer. The Apple Watch works intelligently and can distinguish a dangerous situation from normal exercise. The Series 4 also recognizes certain movement patterns. So if you fall twenty times in a row, the Apple Watch will not attract your attention. (Photo by Unsplash)
