Apple TV has ended the comedy series "Palm Royale" after two seasons. There will be no third season. This means the story of Maxine Simmons ends sooner than expected, and a key plot thread remains unresolved.

Apple TV has established itself in the streaming market in recent years with lavishly produced original content. Series like "Ted Lasso" and, more recently, "The Studio" have reached a broad audience and raised the service's profile. While "Palm Royale" wasn't among these major mainstream successes, it garnered critical attention and received recognition at important award ceremonies. Nevertheless, it ultimately wasn't enough to secure a sequel.

The final end for "Palm Royale"

As reported exclusively by the industry magazine Deadline, Apple TV will not renew the series for a third season. The Emmy-nominated dramedy has thus been officially canceled after two seasons. Apple declined to comment on the decision when contacted by Deadline.

The series premiered on Apple TV on March 20, 2024. A total of 20 episodes were produced, spread across two seasons. The second season ended in January of this year, leaving the central plot unresolved. With the cancellation, this core conflict now remains unresolved.

Basis and plot of the series

"Palm Royale" is based on the 2018 novel "Mr. and Mrs. American Pie" by Julie McDaniel. The story centers on Maxine Simmons, played by Kristen Wiig, as she strives to climb the social ladder in Palm Beach and secure her place within its elite circles. This social ascent forms the core of the story, as summarized in the official Apple TV description.

The series combines comedy elements with dramatic moments and depicts the social competition in a wealthy elite society.

Reviews, ratings and awards

In the public eye, "Palm Royale" lagged behind other Apple TV comedies. Its average rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 60 percent, and on IMDb it's 6.8 out of 10. This placed the series firmly in the middle of the pack, but it didn't reach the popularity of "Ted Lasso" or "The Studio.".

The picture was different at award ceremonies. The first season received a total of eleven Emmy nominations, including one in the category of "Outstanding Comedy Series." The series ultimately won the Emmy for "Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music." Despite this recognition, the format failed to achieve long-term success.

Star-studded cast

A key feature of "Palm Royale" was its star-studded cast. Alongside Kristen Wiig, the film featured Ricky Martin, known from "American Crime Story," Laura Dern from "Twin Peaks: The Return," Allison Janney from "The West Wing," and Carol Burnett, who appeared in "Better Call Saul," among other roles. This distinguished cast underscored the production's ambition and generated considerable buzz beforehand.

Apple TV and the current offer

Apple TV is currently available for €9.99 per month. Its catalog includes not only "Palm Royale" but also productions such as "F1 The Movie," "Pluribus," "Severance," "The Studio," "The Morning Show," "Shrinking," and "Silo." The streaming service continues to focus on exclusive original productions, although not every series lasts for multiple seasons.

Apple TV draws the line

With the decision to end "Palm Royale" after two seasons, Apple TV closes another chapter of its original productions. Despite solid ratings, eleven Emmy nominations, and a high-profile cast, the series failed to break into the mainstream. The story ends after 20 episodes—and with unanswered questions.
