Two weeks ago, Sparkasse gave its first sign of life on the subject of Apple Pay since December 2018. Now the president of the umbrella organization has spoken out.

After the German Savings Banks and Giro Association (DSGV) called for the NFC interface on iPhones and Apple Watches to be opened up at the end of last year, a change in strategy now seems to be imminent. two weeks a spokesman commented on the topic. According to him, the talks between both parties were very positive. Now Helmut Schleweis, president of the umbrella organization, has spoken out on the topic himself. In his announcement, he repeated the most recent statements and how important it is to enable mobile payments on Apple devices. At the same time, however, he stressed that supporting the Girocard (formerly EC card) is of great importance - according to him, only one in three Germans has a credit card.

Project Diamond

The integration of the Girocard is therefore a prerequisite for the introduction of Apple Pay – this should happen very soon. Other financial institutions have already made announcements in this regard in the past. Schleweis promises Apple Pay for Sparkasse customers this year – he did not give an exact date. If you pay any attention to the rumors surrounding project "Diamond" Believe it or not, the service could go live in November this year. (Image: German Savings Banks and Giro Association)
