With iOS 26.5, Apple is preparing a fundamental change within its system. This time, the focus is not just on a classic update, but on a strategic expansion: advertising in the Apple Maps app. The beta version already provides initial indications of this, clearly showing the direction the platform is heading.

For years, Apple has deliberately refrained from advertising in its own system apps. While ads are now commonplace in the App Store, Apple Maps has remained free of them. With iOS 26.5, this approach changes.

This new development shows that Apple wants to tap into additional revenue streams without compromising its privacy principles. This very point is central to the planned changes and is being particularly emphasized by Apple.

Advertising in Apple Maps: What iOS 26.5 brings

The iOS 26.5 beta contains concrete evidence of advertising integration into Apple Maps. The update's code describes how the app will be able to display local ads in the future. These ads will be based on the user's approximate location, current search terms, and the map view during use.

This means that content will be more closely tailored to the specific context. For example, someone searching for specific locations or traveling in a particular region could see relevant offers directly in the app.

Data protection remains a central component

Despite the introduction of advertising, data privacy remains a key issue. Apple explicitly emphasizes that a user's location is not linked to their Apple account. Clicks on ads are also not stored in a personally identifiable way.

Furthermore, Apple does not plan to collect, permanently store, or share data from the Maps app with third parties. The company thus remains true to its established policy of attempting to implement advertising without traditional user profiles.

Launch in the USA and Canada

The rollout of the new advertising feature has already been scheduled. Apple has announced that ads in Apple Maps will launch this summer. Initially, this will only apply to the US and Canada, and to use on iPhone and iPad.

This limited launch suggests that Apple is initially testing the feature in select markets before a possible expansion.

New placements for ads

With iOS 26.5, ads become visible in multiple places within the Maps app. Businesses can place their content directly in search results, making them appear when users search for specific locations or services.

Apple is also introducing a new section called "Suggested Places." This section displays recommendations based on popular nearby locations, previous searches, and other relevant factors. Ads can also be integrated into this section, making them particularly prominent.

Clear labeling of advertising

Apple continues to prioritize transparency in its advertising. Ads are clearly marked as such and visually resemble the ads already familiar from the App Store.

This makes it clear which content is paid for and which is not, which plays an important role in user guidance.

iOS 26.5 brings advertising to Apple Maps

With iOS 26.5, Apple is fundamentally changing how Apple Maps is used. The introduction of advertising marks a strategic move that creates new opportunities for businesses while simultaneously posing new challenges for the user experience.

Apple is pursuing a clear approach: integrating advertising without compromising data privacy. How well this balancing act succeeds will only become clear with wider adoption and use.
