Apple announces an important change that affects users of older iOS devices: The iCloud backup feature for iOS 8 and older versions will be shut down on December 18, 2024. If your device is still running iOS 8 or an older version, it's high time to take action to protect your data from loss.

iCloud backups are one of the most convenient ways to keep your iPhone or iPad data safe. They run in the background and require no manual intervention. From photos and messages to app data and settings, everything is safely stored in the cloud. If you lose your device or set up a new one, you can restore your data with just a few clicks. But this convenient solution has its pitfalls, especially when older technologies like the old iCloud backups are turned off.

What exactly happens to iCloud backups for iOS 8 and earlier?

Starting December 18, 2024, no new backups will be available for devices running iOS 8 or earlier createdExisting backups will remain until this date, but will be permanently deleted after this date. Apple points out that the data on your device will still be available - this only concerns the backup copies in the cloud.

Why is Apple making this change?

The old iCloud backups are based on outdated technology that Apple replaced years ago with the modern CloudKit. Starting with iOS 9, Apple uses this improved infrastructure, which is more reliable and secure. To save resources and increase security for all users, Apple is now turning off support for the old system.

What can you do to secure your data?

Apple offers you two solutions to ensure your data remains protected:

Option 1: Update to a newer iOS version

  • Check if your device supports iOS 9 or later.
  • Go to your device's Settings and select General > Software Update to download the latest compatible version.
  • After the update, your backups will automatically be switched to the newer CloudKit technology.

Option 2: Manual backup via Mac or PC

  • If your device does not support updating to iOS 9 or later, you can create a local backup:
    • Mac users: Connect your device to your Mac and open Finder. Select your device and click “Back up now”.
    • PC users: Use iTunes to create a backup. Connect your device, open iTunes and select the backup option.

Your next steps for secure data

The shutdown of the iCloud backup function for iOS 8 and older versions is an important step by Apple to improve the security and reliability of its system. For you, this means that you should act now. Recommendation: Check today which iOS version is running on your device and decide on one of the two methods mentioned. This way you can ensure that your valuable memories and important information are safe even after December 18, 2024. (Image: Apple)
