iPhone 14 series to rely on two A-series chips

Rumors surrounding the iPhone 14 series have been well documented in recent months. Now there are interesting details regarding the chip usage.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 14 lineup could see a significant split in specs between models: the Pro models will be upgraded to the A16 chip while the non-Pro versions will stick with the A15 Bionic. The iPhone has been around for some time with two model lines. While differences in size, build materials, and camera features have been the main differences so far, there could be performance differences in 2022. According to TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will continue to do its annual chip upgrade, but only for the Pro models.

iPhone 14 series will be equipped with 6 GB of RAM

In the second of two tweets on Sunday says Kuo said that "only two Pro models will upgrade to the A16 processor" while the non-Pro versions "will stick with the A15." If true, that would be a big change in the iPhone lineup, as Apple's flagships typically use the same A-series chip across the generations. Additionally, Kuo expects all models to come with 6GB of memory, with the Pro models using LPDDR5 and the non-Pro models using LPDDR 4X. LPDDR5 typically has a higher data rate than LPDDR4X and saves about 30% of power.

Will Apple replace the notch with a pill-shaped camera?

The tweet was Kuo's second of the day. The first suggested that Apple will change the naming convention and sizes for the 2022 lineup. While the Pro models will be called "iPhone 14 Pro" and "iPhone 14 Pro Max," the non-Pro models will be called "iPhone 14" and "iPhone 14 Max." The sizes will also apparently be similar: 6.1-inch displays for the regular-size versions, 6.7-inch for the Max variants of both lines. Other rumors about the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro include the use of a pill-shaped camera instead of a notch, the elimination of the camera bump, and the use of 48-megapixel camera sensors.
