Apple supplier TSMT, which is heavily involved in the production of the mini-LED displays in the newly announced 12.9-inch iPad Pro, has overcome the technical challenges of producing the mini-LED displays to be used in the upcoming, redesigned 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

Like DigiTimes reported, TSMT initially struggled with production limitations in the circuit board and adhesive materials of the mini-LED displays for the upcoming MacBook Pro models. However, after TSMT adapted its techniques, the production yield was increased to over 95%.

TSMT is the exclusive SMT service provider for the MiniLED backlight of the recently launched 12.9-inch iPad Pro and is expected to do the same for the two upcoming MacBook models with MiniLED backlights. Due to issues with PCBs and adhesive materials, TSMT's surface mount yield for MiniLED backlights was originally not high enough, the sources said. After changing the PCB and adhesive supplier, TSMT has increased the yield to over 95% currently.

MacBook Pro 2021: New design, more ports, no Touch Bar

The redesigned 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to feature next-generation Apple silicon chips, remove the Touch Bar, return the magnetic MagSafe power cable, and feature an overall new design with an HDMI port and SD card slot. Excitement around these new MacBook Pro models, which will target high-end professional customers, has been building since the M1 chip was unveiled in November. The next chip, possibly bearing the M1X or M2 branding, is expected to feature significantly faster performance and greatly improved power efficiency. (Photo by Yurolaitsalbert / Bigstockphoto)
