Apple Patent: The iPhone in Cheese Grater Design

iPhone patent

Alanya, Turkey - November 26, 2021: iPhone 12 Pro Max Gold with home screen IOS 14 on the screen on the table. iPhone 12 Pro Max Gold was created and developed by the Apple inc.

Apple has recently been granted a number of new patents, including a case design for the iPhone that is reminiscent of the cheese grater that is the Mac Pro.

Apple was granted a total of 77 new patents a few days ago. But one stands out in particular: an iPhone with a chassis reminiscent of the Mac Pro. The patent description states:

A structure may include a body having a first surface and a second, opposing surface. The three-dimensional structure may include the body defining a first pattern of first cavities extending from the first surface into the body, and the body may define a second pattern of second cavities extending from the second surface into the body. One or more first cavities may eccentrically intersect with one or more second cavities to define a pattern of openings in the body.

As with any patent, Apple's description sounds more complicated than it actually is. Basically, it says that the iPhone could have the same chassis design that the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR already have.

iPhone in new design: waterproof and dustproof?

Apple notes that using this design in future iPhones could help with both thermal management and structural support, which could be important in the future as iPhones become more powerful in the coming years.

The components of an electronic device, such as a housing of an electronic device, may have three-dimensional structures with properties tailored to the specific purposes for which they are used. The components of an electronic device may be configured to provide physical support or protection to other components of the electronic device, provide heat transfer, provide airflow through or around the electronic device, or serve one or more various other purposes. In addition, the components of the electronic device may be designed to provide a unique and pleasing look and feel to the user.

The attached pictures show what the whole thing could actually look like in the end. Looking at the drawings, it would be interesting to know how Apple could implement something like this while maintaining a waterproof and dustproof design. Basically, the new Apple patent sounds very exciting. But as always, the same applies here - in the end, the whole thing could remain just an idea. (Photo by Denys Prykhodov / Bigstockphoto)
