Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revised his forecast for the official debut of Apple's highly anticipated augmented reality device and now expects the company to announce it in spring 2023.
The analyst according to Apple is still experiencing delays with its mixed reality headset, citing issues "with testing mechanical components and the availability of software development tools." Because of this, it's looking increasingly unlikely that Apple will announce the headset at a media event in January. Kuo expects the company to announce it instead at an Apple event in the spring or at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. While he believes the device could be announced in the first half of 2023, he doesn't expect it to ship until the end of the second or third quarter of 2023.
Apple's mixed reality headset to launch in 2023
In December, Apple reportedly changed the name of its mixed-reality operating system to "xrOS," hinting that the company could be close to releasing a mixed-reality headset. Apple's first headset, currently in an "advanced" stage of development, could feature two 4K OLED displays, 15 externally mounted camera modules, and potential support for eye tracking and hand gestures. The first wave could also be an expensive headset, with prices as high as $3,000 realistic. In a detailed report by The Information earlier this week listed a long list of features for the long-discussed device, including a Digital Crown-like dial for switching between virtual and physical viewing modes and more.
