For several months now, there have been reports that Apple is planning to introduce new MacBook Pro models in 14- and 16-inch sizes. Now, further evidence has emerged.

Rumours have it that Apple is planning to introduce two MacBook Pro models this year, 14- and 16-inch. Both devices will have a brand new design and mini-LED backlighting. DigiTimes has now confirmed these rumors once again, based on reports from the supply chain. The article largely focuses on Radiant Opto-Electronics, the supplier of backlight units for various technology companies and car manufacturers. The report states that Radiant will be the exclusive supplier of backlight units for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models released in the second half of 2021.

Apple is expected to introduce MacBook Pro models with 14- and 16-inch MiniLED backlights in the second half of 2021, with Radiant being the exclusive supplier of the BLUs and Quanta Computer being an OEM, the sources said.

In addition to the new MacBook devices, the iPad Pro 2021 series will also receive the same display technology.

MacBook Pro 14/16″: Devices to get more ports

As a reminder, iPads and MacBooks have LCD screens that require backlighting. The current generation backlight is made of LEDs and can contain dozens to hundreds of them, depending on the display size. MiniLED uses much smaller LEDs - larger displays can use more than a thousand of them. This offers much better control over the local backlight, allowing for higher brightness and deeper blacks. The combination increases the contrast ratio and uses less power. If previous reports are to be believed, the new MacBook Pro range will also get more ports in addition to MiniLED technology. Bloomberg has already reported that the devices will get an SD card slot, an HDMI port and a MagSafe port. However, the Touch Bar will be dropped as part of the update. Since various sources report a market launch in the second half of the year, it can be assumed that the new MacBooks will be introduced sometime in the fall. (Photo by Ekaterina79 / Bigstockphoto)
