For years, Apple has stood for innovative technologies that make everyday life easier and more connected. With the new Smart Home Hub, the company plans to establish itself in the smart home sector. However, the device, known as the "Apple Command Center" or "HomePad," may appear later than expected. You can find out why this is the case and what the hub is supposed to offer here.

Smart home systems are becoming increasingly important as they make our everyday lives more comfortable and efficient. With the new hub, Apple wants to create a central control unit that fits perfectly into the existing Apple ecosystem. But although initial rumors pointed to a market launch in March, there are signs that the release could be delayed. Nevertheless, there are promising details that make it worthwhile to take a closer look at the product.

Functions and design of the Smart Home Hub

Apple has set itself some goals to make the new hub an indispensable part of your smart home. Here are the most important functions and features that are known so far:

  • Display and camera: The Hub has a square 7-inch display with a relatively thick bezel. There is a camera integrated into the top of the device that is specifically designed for video applications such as FaceTime.
  • Battery and mobility: A rechargeable, built-in battery allows you to flexibly place the device in different places in your home.
  • Operating system homeOS: The hub runs on a specially developed operating system called homeOS. This is designed to make controlling your smart home more intuitive and efficient.
  • StandBy-inspired dashboard: The user interface is designed to display important information at a glance and enable easy navigation.
  • Integration into the Apple ecosystem: The hub supports many well-known Apple apps and is designed to work particularly well with Apple Intelligence and other Apple devices.
  • Flexibility in placement: You can either hang the hub on the wall or place it on a work surface. According to insiders, it might make sense to use the device in several places in the house.

The focus on video applications and smart home control

A particular focus is on the use of video applications. The camera is ideal for FaceTime conversations and could even be used for security functions in conjunction with the planned Apple security camera. At the same time, the hub offers a central platform for controlling your entire smart home system - be it lighting, heating or other networked devices.

Possible delays in market launch

The original plan was to launch the new hub in March. Loud However, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believes there could be delays, mainly due to the tight integration of the new operating system - known by the code name Pebble - with the App Intents features of the upcoming iOS versions 18.4 and 19. Since the device relies heavily on Apple intelligence, it's understandable that Apple wants to make sure everything works smoothly. However, Gurman expects there to be at least a preview of the product in the next few months, even if the actual release may come later.

Further planned products for the Smart Home

In addition to the Hub, Apple is working on a number of other smart home devices. These include:

  • A doorbell with Face ID designed to increase the level of security in your home.
  • A private security camera that meets the highest data protection standards.
  • The introduction of “LLM Siri”, an AI-powered assistant that will be available with iOS 19.4 in spring 2026.

These products show that Apple is not only relying on the hub but is pursuing a complete smart home strategy.

The Smart Home Hub: Apple’s next big thing?

The Apple Smart Home Hub could be a crucial step in the development of smart home technology. With a clear focus on ease of use, intelligent integration and high-quality features, the device has the potential to make your home smarter. Despite possible delays, Apple seems determined to bring a product to market that lives up to high expectations. If you want to equip your smart home with a central control system, it's worth keeping an eye on the development of the Apple Smart Home Hub. The next few months should be exciting. (Image: Apple)
