Rumor has it that Apple is planning to fundamentally redesign the iPhone SE 4. However, the decision regarding the display size is still pending.

Rumour has it that the next generation of the iPhone SE will be released in 2024. The device will use the design of the iPhone XR. But the display size is still pending. At least that is what the well-informed display analyst Ross Young claims on Twitter (visible only to super followers). The company is reportedly considering 6.1-inch OLED displays from two suppliers, as well as 5.7 to 6.1-inch LCDs from two other suppliers. Given this information, it is still unclear whether Apple will opt for a 5.7-inch display or a 6.1-inch display, and whether that display will use OLED or LCD technology. An OLED display would of course be significantly more expensive. As a reminder, the current iPhone SE model uses an LCD display with thick bezels and a Touch ID home button. Apple's flagship iPhone lineup features OLED panels, with all models since the iPhone 12 using OLED.

iPhone SE 4 in new design

It's possible that OLED panel prices have dropped enough that Apple wants to use them for the budget iPhone SE, especially since the device isn't due out for another two years. Both the 5.7- and 6.1-inch display sizes have been teased in the past, including by Young himself. The fact that Apple hasn't made a final decision yet explains why we keep hearing about two different display sizes. Regardless of whether Apple opts for a 5.7-inch display or a 6.1-inch display, Young believes the iPhone SE 4 will have a full-display design with a notch. But Face ID isn't expected. As things stand, Apple is likely to continue to rely on Touch ID, with the fingerprint sensor to be placed in the side button. (Photo by Unsplash / Tom Barrett)
