iPhone 2022

Rostov-on-Don, Russia - November 2020. iPhone 12 is green on a marble surface. New smartphone from Apple company close-up.

In a note to investors, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has made a new prediction regarding iPhone optics. A so-called "unibody" rear lens design and the introduction of "periscope" arrangements are said to be planned.

According to the analyst, the 2022 iPhone will use a "unibody" design, where the camera's voice coil motor is integrated into the lens array. Compared to current modules that use the same components as separate and distinct parts, a unibody design could save valuable internal space while increasing the device's robustness. Kuo also claims that Apple plans to upgrade the telephoto shooter on high-end iPhones next year from a 6P to a 7P stack. The 7P stack was introduced with the iPhone 12 and is currently found in the wide-angle camera module. Compared to the previous 6P array with f/1.8, the current assembly achieves an aperture of f/1.6.

iPhone 2023 to use "periscope" arrangements

It is expected that Apple will switch all lenses to 7P in the coming years. In addition, Kuo claims to have learned that in 2023 the iPhone will feature a periscope telephoto lens design for the first time. Periscope lenses typically consist of a series of prisms and mirrors that effectively extend the focal length of a compact lens array. In the case of smartphones, the technology can be designed to direct light from the front element through a prism to an imaging point or sensor deep in the phone's body. Kuo previously stated that the technology could debut in 2022 - but now it seems that it will not be until 2023 at the earliest. (Photo by Eremin / Bigstockphoto)
