Rumors about the upcoming iPhone series have already been documented several times. Most recently, the camera was discussed. Now there is news about the ProMotion display.

Many fans had hoped that Apple would give the iPhone 12 series a ProMotion display. But that was not the case. It was already claimed in advance that the 120Hz panels would not be used until next year at the earliest. Now the news site The Elec has spoken out.

ProMotion: “LTPO technology is essential”

TheElec has learned that LG Display will expand the production rate of its OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panel factory lines destined for Apple.

LG Display plans to deploy low-temperature polycrystal oxide (LPTO) thin-film transistor (TFT) TFT equipment, which will be able to add 25,000 substrates per month to the lines at a monthly production rate by next year.

The LTPO equipment that will be placed on the production lines is intended to supply OLED panels for the iPhone next year, while those after May are intended for panels for iPhones in 2022.

LTPO technology would result in a low-power backplane that is responsible for turning each pixel on the display on and off. The technology could pave the way for longer battery life and/or new features such as ProMotion or always-on display elements. Display analyst Ross Young has stated several times that LTPO is essential if Apple wants to support ProMotion in a future iPhone.

iPhone 2021: Apple could rework camera and display

It allows a variable refresh rate to optimize battery life. ProMotion technology enables a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz for smoother motion content and greater responsiveness. The feature was first introduced on the iPad Pro in 2017. So far, everything indicates that Apple will redesign the iPhone camera and display next year. However, since the rumors are documented at a very early stage, the whole thing should of course be viewed with skepticism as always.
