Although the iPhone 17 series hasn't even been unveiled yet, initial information about the iPhone 18 Pro is already surfacing. These aren't minor upgrades, but rather a possible design change that many users should be happy about. There's talk of under-display Face ID—a move Apple has apparently been working toward for years. Rumors at this early stage aren't uncommon, but when they come from reliable sources, it's worth taking a closer look.
Indications of a major redesign for the iPhone 18 Pro come from several credible sources. Ross Young, vice president at Counterpoint Research and known for his accurate information on upcoming display technologies, recently shared a post that is sure to catch your attention. He refers to a statement made by Michael Helander, CEO of OTI Lumionics, at the SID Business Conference. Helander expects that smartphones with under-display Face ID will first hit the market in 2026. OTI Lumionics supplies materials for precisely this technology—and Apple is apparently among the first to embrace it.
Face ID under the display: What exactly is planned
According to current information, Apple will use a Face ID system on the iPhone 18 Pro, which is installed directly under the display. This means that the facial recognition sensors will still be present, but will no longer be visible. Only a small hole in the upper left corner of the screen will remain – this is where the front camera is located. The previously familiar pill-shaped cutout, known from the Dynamic Island, will be eliminated on the iPhone 18 Pro. Whether this also means the end of the Dynamic Island as a feature has not been confirmed at this time. It is also possible that Apple will find a new solution to display notifications and interactions differently.
Several sources confirm the new design
In addition to Ross Young, Wayne Ma of The Information has also independently reported that Apple plans to use under-screen Face ID on the iPhone 18 Pro. Both sources indicate that Apple already has concrete plans and is using technology from OTI Lumionics. The statements coincide in timing and content, further supporting the rumors.
Market launch: When will the iPhone 18 Pro be released?
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro in September 2026, as usual. This corresponds to the typical release cycle. There's still some time until then to get the new technology ready for production. However, there are increasing signs that Apple is serious about this goal.
iPhone 18 Pro could herald a new design direction
If current indications are confirmed, the iPhone 18 Pro will be the first Apple smartphone with under-display Face ID. The familiar notch for the sensors would disappear, leaving the display almost completely free. This could allow Apple to set a new standard, not only in its own lineup but also among the competition. Face ID will remain, but will be invisible – a step toward an even cleaner, more modern device design.
