Apple will most likely unveil the next generation of iPhones in about two months, and reports are now saying that the company is expecting high demand.
As Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported, Apple typically orders around 75 million units of a new iPhone for its launch period, which usually runs from September/October to the end of the year. This year, however, the company plans to increase its production by 201%. The main reason for ordering more iPhone units is because the company believes the phones will be more interesting to many people this year as the world slowly emerges from COVID-19 restrictions.

Aside from shipment quantities, the report echoes a number of "iPhone 13" hardware rumors documented months ago by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and other industry insiders. According to Bloomberg, this year's iPhone lineup - codenamed D16, D17, D63, and D64 - will adopt a design introduced with the iPhone 12 in 2020, albeit with some new features. Apple reportedly plans to introduce its first iPhone display made of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) on at least one model, allowing for variable refresh rates that span the spectrum. High-efficiency indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) technology is expected to accompany the LTPO hardware. Apple currently uses an LTPO solution in the Apple Watch to enable the wearable's always-on screen.

Previous rumors suggested that Apple will use LTPO technology in two iPhones in 2021, both of which could support Apple's 120Hz ProMotion feature. The report also mentions improved optics and a smaller TrueDepth "notch." Zoom optics are specifically mentioned, although a recent report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the high-end iPhones will benefit from a more sensitive wide-angle camera and ultra-wide-angle autofocus. Apple's work to shrink the TrueDepth notch is also well-documented, with reports on the subject dating back to January. In addition, the new system-on-chip (SoC) will have the same six cores as the A14 Bionic. It will, however, offer more power. Finally, Bloomberg explains that Apple has been testing iPhone versions without a notch and with Touch ID under the screen. However, neither feature is expected to appear this year.
