Display analyst Ross Young has once again correctly predicted that the 2022 11-inch iPad Pro update will not have MiniLED backlighting. Now he claims that both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models will get OLED in two years.

A few days before Apple unveiled the new iPad Pro models, Young reiterated his belief that rumors that the 11-inch model would also use mini-LED backlighting were false. "That won't happen," he said. Now he has posted his new prediction on Twitter published.

Next iPad Pro generation could catch up

Sorry I was right that the displays on the new iPad Pros won't change... flex...:) In 2024 we will see OLEDs on both.

MiniLED allows screens to adjust the strength of the backlight on any part of the screen. This means they can, for example, produce darker blacks by dimming their MiniLEDs where needed. OLED is also capable of producing higher quality screens, albeit with much thinner panels. Apple first used OLED on the Apple Watch before adopting it in the iPhone lineup with the iPhone X. Young had previously said that the 11-inch model would not receive a MiniLED update in 2022. In March 2022, he hypothesized that Apple was holding back MiniLED backlighting on that device because it is proving to be a key differentiator that drives sales of the more expensive 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
