The upcoming release of iOS 18 is already being hailed as one of the biggest software updates for the iPhone. Apple fans around the world are excited about the new features and improvements that the update will bring. One of the most exciting new additions concerns the popular Messages app, which could soon be even more versatile and entertaining.

The way we communicate has changed drastically in recent years. With the introduction of iMessage, Apple has created a platform that offers much more than just simple text exchanges. From bubble effects to full-screen animations, iMessage has changed the way we send messages. But iOS 18 could take it to a new level.

New text effects in iMessage

According to a report by Joe Rossignol of MacRumors, Apple plans to add a new text effects feature to the Messages app in iOS 18. So far, you can send iMessages with various bubble or full-screen effects, like invisible ink or confetti. But the new text effects are set to go even further by allowing you to add animations to individual words in a message. Imagine being able to make a single word stand out by making it blink, wiggle, or even jump—the possibilities are endless and could make the messaging experience even more dynamic and expressive.

Rich text support: A long-awaited feature?

The idea of formatting text down to individual words or letters is not new. Many apps already support rich text controls such as bold, italics and underlining. Creating bullet points, numbered lists or various headings is also possible in many applications. It therefore seems only logical that Apple would also integrate these functions into iMessage. But the rumor about iOS 18 does not speak directly of rich text but of "text effects". This leaves room for speculation.

Text Animations: A Look into the Future

The ability to animate individual words would be a completely new feature and could fundamentally change the way we perceive and send messages. Text animations could be integrated not only into iMessage but also into other pre-installed apps such as Notes or Mail. This would significantly improve the overall user experience of iOS 18 and offer new creative expression possibilities.

Our opinion

The idea that Apple is planning some form of rich text support for Messages in iOS 18 is extremely exciting. The basic features like bold, italics, and underline are likely just the beginning. The ability to animate, highlight, or otherwise emphasize individual words sounds like a lot of fun and could make communication on iPhones more interesting. WWDC on June 10 will surely answer many of these questions and give us a close look at the upcoming features.

The Future of iMessage: Text Animations and More in iOS 18

iOS 18 promises to be one of the most exciting updates in iPhone history. With new text effects and possibly even rich text support in iMessage, we're in for an exciting time. These new features could fundamentally change the way we send and receive messages. Stay tuned to WWDC to find out all the details and try out the latest features for yourself.
