Apple is reportedly about to release a new update for iOS 17. While many are eagerly awaiting iOS 18 and its features, iOS 17 remains relevant for most iPhone users.

iOS updates are important, not only because of new features but also because of security updates and bug fixes. Even though iOS 18 is already on the horizon, iOS 17.6.1 remains current for many users. Here's what you can expect from this update.

What is iOS 17.6.1 all about?

A reliable social media account has reported (via 9to5mac) that iOS 17.6.1 will be released soon. This update has the build number 21G93. However, there is always the possibility that Apple will pull the update before release, as was the case with iOS 17.5.2.

What did iOS 17.6 bring?

The last update, iOS 17.6, mainly included bug fixes and security improvements. One new feature was the “Catch Up” feature in the TV app, which uses machine learning to compile clips of MLS games.

What can we expect from iOS 17.6.1?

There are no details yet about what exactly will be included in iOS 17.6.1. It will probably be minor improvements and bug fixes. Big new features are unlikely, as the focus is already on iOS 18.

Outlook on iOS 18

While we wait for iOS 17.6.1, it's interesting to know that iOS 18 is scheduled to be released in September and iOS 18.1 in October with new Apple Intelligence features. Until then, iOS 17.6.1 remains relevant for current users.

iOS 17.6.1: A small but important update

iOS 17.6.1 may not be a major update, but it shows the importance of continuous improvements. Even though iOS 18 and iOS 18.1 are getting a lot of attention, you should keep your iPhone updated to benefit from the latest security updates and bug fixes. (Photo by Bigc Studio / Bigstockphoto)
