The iPhone has revolutionized the smartphone landscape since its launch in 2007, with each new model bringing innovation and technological advancements. Yet despite the enthusiasm for foldable smartphones led by Android manufacturers like Samsung, Apple remains cautious in the field. According to market research firm TrendForce, a foldable iPhone is unlikely before 2027. Below, you'll find out why that is and what challenges Apple must overcome before bringing such a device to market.

Foldable smartphones have become a hot topic in recent years. They promise to combine the best of both worlds: the portability of a smartphone and the generous screen of a tablet. Android manufacturers like Samsung have already launched several models, but success has been mixed. So why is Apple hesitant to join this trend? To answer this question, let's take a look at what has happened so far and the hurdles Apple still has to overcome.

The unfolding of previous reports about a foldable iPhone

Rumors of a foldable iPhone have been circulating for years. With the launch of several foldable Android phones, this speculation has only increased. However, Apple is known for taking a wait-and-see approach to new technologies and carefully considering a new product before launching it. The launch of Samsung's first Galaxy Fold in 2019 served as a cautionary tale of how dangerous it can be to act too soon.

The problems with foldable screens

The biggest challenge with foldable smartphones is the screen. Most of these devices use a single flexible screen that is subjected to enormous stress when unfolding and folding. A common problem is the visible crease in the middle of the screen, which is not only unsightly but also poses the risk of damaging the screen from repeated folding. Dust and dirt particles can also enter the folding mechanisms and cause damage.

Apple's strict quality requirements

Apple has very high quality standards and is therefore hesitant to launch a foldable iPhone until these issues are fully resolved. According to TrendForce is located Apple is currently in the phase of testing potential components. The company places particular emphasis on crease resistance and reliability. These strict requirements are the main reason why a foldable iPhone is not expected until 2027 at the earliest.

market development and forecasts

TrendForce reports that foldable phones are still a niche product and will only account for 1.5% of the smartphone market in 2024. Although this segment is forecast to grow, market penetration is only expected to reach 4.8% by 2028. If Apple does indeed launch a foldable iPhone, it could significantly change the dynamics in the market and pave the way for wider adoption.

Apple's approach: quality before haste with foldable smartphones

Although the idea of a foldable iPhone is tempting, Apple remains true to its tradition of only releasing products when they meet the company's high quality standards. The challenges, especially in terms of durability and reliability of the foldable screens, should not be underestimated. A foldable iPhone before 2027 is therefore unlikely. But when the time finally comes, you can be sure that Apple will deliver a well-developed and high-quality product that could revolutionize the market. (Photo by artmagination / Bigstockphoto)
