Apple could soon release the next big thing for your smart home: a new smart home accessory with a surprising design and practical functions. The device is intended to act as a central controller for your HomeKit and Matter devices and could be very different from previous Apple products such as the iPad, HomePod and Apple TV. But what makes this new product so special and what features can we expect?

According to a report by 9to5Mac Apple is working on a new smart home device with a square display that will serve as a central controller for HomeKit and Matter devices. There have been rumors about such a product in recent years, and now more details about its design and features are emerging. Bloomberg also confirmed this information, describing the device as a mix of iPad, HomePod and Apple TV.

The square display: A difference to the iPad

One of the most striking features of the new device is the square display, which would distinguish it from the typical rectangular iPads. While the iPad was designed for versatile tasks and mobility, the square design suggests that this device is specifically intended for stationary use in the smart home. It could be able to centrally control smart devices and possibly offer a fixed solution for the home.

functions and possible features

The information known so far suggests that the device could adopt a variety of features inspired by existing Apple products. These include:

  • Control center for HomeKit and Matter: The device could simplify and centralize the control of your smart home devices, such as lights, thermostats and security cameras.
  • Integrated FaceTime Camera: It is speculated that there will be an integrated camera that will enable FaceTime calls. Additionally, the camera could offer advanced features such as recognizing hand gestures and distinguishing people to enable personalized requests.
  • Media playback and AirPlay: Like the HomePod, this device will also serve as an AirPlay receiver and be able to play media, similar to an Apple TV.
  • Gesture control: Another exciting feature could be the recognition of hand gestures, which allows intuitive control of the device from a distance.

Technical Equipment

The new device could be powered by an A18 chip, indicating strong processing power. This chip would be able to support advanced features of Siri, which Apple plans to launch in 2025. The integration of a powerful chip would allow the device to handle complex tasks such as facial recognition, media playback, and controlling multiple devices at once.

release date

There are conflicting reports on when the device might launch, with previous rumors suggesting it will be released sometime in 2025 at the earliest. 9to5Mac, on the other hand, speculates that the device could be released as early as spring 2025, suggesting that it is already in an advanced stage of development.

Apple brings a breath of fresh air to the smart home: This could happen

Apple's upcoming smart home device could be an interesting innovation in the field of home technology. With its square display, the integration of HomeKit and Matter as well as the ability to play media and FaceTime, it could play a central role in your smart home. Whether and when the device will actually appear remains to be seen, but it could soon become a reality. (Image: Apple)
