Apple Intelligence in China: Apple's new plan with Alibaba

Apple is working hard to make its artificial intelligence "Apple Intelligence" available worldwide. So far, the technology is only available in a few English-speaking countries, but the company wants to introduce it in China as well. Apple is facing a major challenge: the country's strict regulations make it difficult to offer AI models without adjustments. To solve this problem, Apple is now entering into a partnership with Alibaba. Together, the two companies want to adapt Apple Intelligence to Chinese regulations and speed up the approval process.

China is one of Apple's most important markets. The country is not only one of the largest sales markets for iPhones but also a central part of the company's global production and supply chain. In recent years, however, Apple has struggled with declining sales in China. Market share has shrunk while local players like Huawei have become increasingly stronger. A successful launch of Apple Intelligence in China could help the company make up lost ground. AI-powered features are a key selling point for new iPhones and if Apple cannot offer them in China, it could put it at a further disadvantage compared to the competition. But before Apple Intelligence can be used there, a number of regulatory hurdles must be overcome.

Challenges of introducing Apple Intelligence in China

China has strict rules on the use of artificial intelligence. Companies that operate or want to offer AI models must adhere to national regulations. This includes, among other things, control over content generated by AI. Companies must also work with local partners to ensure that the technology complies with regulations. Apple has traditionally taken a very privacy-friendly approach. The company relies heavily on processing data directly on devices ("on-device AI") and is known for strictly regulating access to user data. However, this approach contradicts Chinese regulations, which in many cases require greater control and data collection. Previous attempts to bring Apple Intelligence to China have therefore failed.

Failed partnerships with Baidu, Tencent and ByteDance

Apple had initially tried to work with Baidu, one of China's leading artificial intelligence companies. However, these negotiations failed due to several problems. Firstly, the language models developed by Baidu were not able to deliver the quality and precision that Apple expects. Secondly, there was disagreement on the issue of data protection. Baidu wanted more access to user data to improve the quality of AI responses, but Apple was not willing to make this compromise. After the failed Baidu deal, Apple turned to Tencent and ByteDance. Both companies have also developed advanced AI models and could have been considered as partners. But apparently they also did not meet the requirements that Apple had for a collaboration. Finally, the company decided to enter into negotiations with Alibaba, as The Information reports. reported.

Why Alibaba is the right partner for Apple

Alibaba is one of China's largest technology companies and has extensive experience in the field of artificial intelligence. Alibaba's huge data set from the e-commerce business is particularly valuable to Apple. This data could be used to better tailor Apple Intelligence to the needs of Chinese users. Another advantage is that Alibaba has existing structures and approvals for operating AI in China. This allows Apple to significantly speed up the approval process. The two companies have already submitted jointly developed AI functions for regulatory review, it is reported. If approved, Apple Intelligence could be unlocked for Chinese users with a future iOS update.

Market launch in China – the last hurdle for Apple Intelligence

Apple has set itself the goal of offering Apple Intelligence in simplified Chinese for users outside of China in April. However, the launch in China itself will only be possible once the authorities give the green light. If approved, this could be an important step in strengthening Apple's market position in China. For Apple, it's not just about the availability of a new function. Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a decisive factor in the sales success of new smartphones. Manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi are already integrating advanced AI technologies into their devices, and Apple cannot afford to lag behind in this area. The partnership with Alibaba could therefore help Apple to win back the Chinese market. At the same time, it remains to be seen whether Apple will manage to reconcile its strict data protection standards with the requirements of the Chinese authorities. The next few months will show whether the strategy works. (Image: Apple)
