AirPods Max: No major upgrade in sight

The AirPods Max, Apple's high-priced over-ear headphones, have received little attention since their launch in December 2020. Meanwhile, the AirPods Pro have been regularly updated and improved. Many have been waiting for a major upgrade to the AirPods Max, but it seems Apple will not fulfill those hopes.

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported in its Power On newsletter that Apple apparently does not plan any major changes for the AirPods Max. The planned update is said to be so minor that not even the generation number will be changed. This news will surely disappoint many Apple fans who have been waiting for new features and improvements. The main reason for this update is apparently to meet the European Commission's requirements that mandate the use of USB-C for charging accessories.

No groundbreaking upgrade to be expected

Currently, the AirPods Max come with a Lightning connector, which does not comply with EU regulations, so Apple plans to equip the headphones with a USB-C port to comply with European regulations. The information suggests that the AirPods Max will continue to use the H1 chip instead of upgrading to the H2 chip. This means that they will not be able to support the advanced software features available to the AirPods Pro 2 with iOS 17. These include features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversational Awareness, personalized volume, and Siri alarm clock support. There is also no indication that the case design will be overhauled and the U1 chip for precision search will still be missing. This certainly leaves those who were hoping for comprehensive improvements to the expensive AirPods Max disappointed.

Future prospects for the AirPods Max

Overall, Apple doesn't seem to be planning any major changes or improvements for the AirPods Max anytime soon. While the introduction of USB-C is a welcome addition, these headphones will likely continue to lag behind the AirPods Pro. This is certainly a disappointment for those who have been waiting for a groundbreaking upgrade, but it remains to be seen whether Apple will change its plans in the future.
