With tvOS 26, Apple is making targeted improvements to the smart home experience. The update integrates the new Thread version 1.4, which provides greater stability, range, and speed in your home network. If you control your home with HomeKit, Apple TV, and other Apple devices, you'll benefit directly from this change.
Thread isn't new to Apple. Apple has been using this protocol for years, for example in the HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K. With Thread 1.4, Apple is now taking an important step forward – the network becomes more efficient, response times are shorter, and communication between devices is noticeably improved. tvOS 26 is the first Apple update to officially integrate Thread 1.4. Combined with iOS 18, this enables a more stable, faster, and more intelligent smart home system.
What is Thread and why does it play a central role in tvOS 26?
Thread is an IP-based wireless protocol specifically developed for smart home devices. It connects devices in a so-called mesh network—meaning every device can communicate with every other, even if Wi-Fi is unavailable. This network is self-healing, meaning if a device fails, the system automatically searches for new connections. Thread offers several advantages over traditional Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections. It requires less power, works more reliably at the edges of the home, and provides a more robust connection between devices overall.
tvOS 26 supports Thread 1.4 – what’s new?
With the update to tvOS 26, Apple is integrating the latest version of the Thread protocol for the first time: Thread 1.4. This version brings several important new features:
- Devices form a common mesh network, regardless of their manufacturer or operating system. This means there's no longer a separate network for each platform – everything runs through a central, interconnected system.
- Accessories are given a direct connection to the internet, enabling new functions – such as blinds that automatically adjust to the weather or lights that react to current sports scores.
- The performance of the network improves measurably because all Thread nodes have direct access to the Internet.
- It will be easier for manufacturers to test, debug, and roll out Threaded products. This benefits you as a user because devices are updated faster and run more reliably.
Which Apple devices support Thread?
Apple has already integrated Thread into several products:
- Apple TV 4K (all generations from 2nd Gen)
- HomePod mini
- HomePod (2nd generation)
- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
These devices can act as so-called Thread border routers. This means they connect the Thread network to your regular home network and allow you to control your devices via iPhone or Siri. Since iOS 18, it's also been possible to control Thread accessories directly via the iPhone – without the need for a border router.
Why is Thread 1.4 a real step forward?
Thread version 1.4, released in September 2024, takes the protocol to a new level. The central idea: more devices, more stability, more control. You no longer have to rely on the range of your router or individual devices – the network functions as a closed, intelligent, and flexible network. Battery-operated devices also benefit. Because Thread is particularly power-efficient, it's ideal for smart locks, sensors, or blinds that need to run for long periods with little energy.
- Another advantage: The new network is easier to monitor. Manufacturers can analyze it better and fix errors more quickly – which means fewer outages, less frustration, and a more stable smart home experience for you.
tvOS 26 provides more stability in everyday life
tvOS 26 brings Thread 1.4, a crucial upgrade for your Apple-centric smart home. If you have an Apple TV 4K, your device now becomes even more of a control center for your connected devices. For you as a user, this means fewer delays, better automation, and a noticeably better smart home experience.
