Meta is expanding its Threads social media platform with two new features that offer more control over visibility and interactions. The update initially affects the iPhone app but is expected to be available on other platforms as well. With these new options, Meta is responding to the community's desire for better overview and stronger moderation.
Threads, an app by Meta, was launched in 2023 and is closely linked to Instagram. It emerged at a time when many users were looking for alternatives to X, formerly known as Twitter. The goal was to create a platform where conversations could be more open and personal. Since its launch, Threads has reached approximately 150 million daily active users, according to Meta, making it one of the fastest-growing social media platforms. To meet increasing demands, Meta is now expanding the app with two new features designed to help users manage content and replies more effectively.
More control through new filters in the activity area
With the latest update, Threads introduces two new filters in the "Activity" tab: "Mentions" and "People you follow." This allows for better customization and a clearer overview of the activity feed.
The "Mentions" filter displays only posts and comments in which your profile has been directly tagged. This makes it easier to identify relevant interactions without having to scroll through a long list of general activity. The second filter, "People you follow," limits the display to activity from accounts already in your network. This provides a clearer overview of reactions and discussions within your trusted community.
This new feature is particularly helpful for users with many followers or numerous mentions. It makes the activity section less cluttered and allows it to focus more on content that is actually of interest.
Approve answers before they become visible
In addition to the filters, the "Review and approve replies" option simplifies the handling of comments. When writing a post, users can set replies to be publicly visible only after approval by the author.
This allows for better control of discussions before they appear in the feed. Users with larger followings or public profiles especially benefit, as unwanted or offensive replies are not published in the first place. This reduces potential spam and creates a more pleasant discussion environment.
In contrast to other platforms where moderation usually only takes place after the fact, Threads is taking a preventative approach. The new feature strengthens the protection of individual posts and allows for more targeted control of public discourse.
Availability and outlook
The new features are currently available in the Threads app for iPhone. Meta has announced that they will also be rolled out to other platforms, such as Android and the web version.
With these updates, Threads once again demonstrates that user-friendliness and control are at the heart of its development. The company is responding to the growing demands on social media platforms, where security, transparency, and individual customization are becoming increasingly important.
With these changes, Threads is clearly positioning itself against competitors like X, Bluesky, and Mastodon. While other networks focus primarily on reach and open discussions, Threads prioritizes security and controllability of interactions.
Threads focuses on structure and security in the social feed
With new filters in the activity panel and the ability to approve replies before publication, Threads gains two features that significantly improve content management. Users can better control which activities they see and which reactions to their posts become public. These changes align with Meta's strategy to make Threads a positive and manageable platform. They help ensure that interactions remain more personal and respectful—without the chaos that plagues many other social networks. Threads is thus evolving into a platform that prioritizes structure and security. (Image: Shutterstock / Diego Thomazini)
