Emojis have become an indispensable part of our digital communication. They give our messages expressiveness and emotions that words alone often cannot convey. Every year we eagerly await the new emoji updates from Apple and other major tech companies. Below you will find out all about the latest emojis that could be introduced with the upcoming iOS 18 update.

The Unicode Consortium, which is responsible for standardizing and updating the emoji database, recently launched the beta phase for Unicode 16 startedThis phase will run until July 2, 2024, after which the new emojis will be officially approved. Apple usually takes a few months to integrate these new emojis into their systems. It is expected that we will see the new characters with iOS 18.4, which is expected to be released in March 2025.

New Emojis: An Overview

Seven new characters are being considered for the next emoji update. These are:

  • Face with bags under the eyes: An emoji that could express tiredness or sadness.
  • Fingerprint: Perfect for discussions about security or identity.
  • Leafless tree: Could indicate climate change or the seasons.
  • Root vegetables: Ideal for discussions about nutrition and gardening.
  • Harp: A symbol of music and culture.
  • Shovel: Useful for construction or gardening work.
  • Splash: A versatile emoji that could represent water, paint, or other liquids.

The process of emoji development

The development and introduction of new emojis is a multi-stage process. First, the proposals are collected and reviewed by the Unicode Consortium. After an intensive beta phase in which feedback and improvements are incorporated, official approval is given. Apple then takes several months to design these new emojis and integrate them into its operating systems. Adaptation to Apple's design and usability tests are crucial steps in this process.

Review: The latest emoji updates

In March 2024, Apple released a number of new emojis with iOS 17.4. These included:

  • Lime: A fruity emoji that represents freshness and flavor.
  • Edible brown mushroom: Perfect for culinary discussions and nature topics.
  • Phoenix: A powerful symbol of rebirth and transformation.
  • Broken chain: A sign of freedom or separation.
  • Vertical head shake: An emoji for agreement or confirmation.
  • Horizontal head shake: An emoji that expresses rejection or negation.

These new characters quickly became popular and were used in many areas, from everyday conversations to special topics.
