The Biden administration has announced the recipients of this year's Presidential Medal of Freedom. Among the 17 recipients is the late CEO and co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs.

The posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom will be awarded to Jobs for his role in changing the way the world communicates and for "transforming the computer, music, film, and wireless industries." President Biden's announcement states:

US President posthumously awards Steve Jobs the Medal of Freedom

Steve Jobs (d. 2011) was co-founder, CEO, and chairman of Apple, Inc., CEO of Pixar, and served as a leader at The Walt Disney Company. His vision, ingenuity, and creativity led to inventions that have changed, and continue to change, the way the world communicates.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the "highest civilian honor" of the United States. It is awarded to individuals who have "made an exemplary contribution to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, to world peace, or to other significant societal, public, or private endeavors." Jobs died on October 5, 2011 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Posthumous awards of the Medal of Freedom are rare but not entirely unusual. (Photo by Unsplash / AB)
