Samsung today announced the launch of its next-generation foldable smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. The South Korean company has been making foldable devices since 2019, so these new smartphones represent four years of development.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 6.7-inch 120 Hz AMOLED display and folds vertically. When folded, a 1.9-inch AMOLED display shows the time, notifications, and other information at a glance. There is a fingerprint sensor on the side for biometric authentication. Compared to the previous model, the Z Flip 4 offers a slimmer hinge, straighter edges, and a shiny metal frame with a clouded back glass. The Z Flip 4 has a dual camera on the back with a 12-megapixel wide-angle and an ultra-wide-angle camera, as well as a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the front. A built-in "FlexCam" feature enables hands-free videos, group selfies, and more when the Z Flip 4 is partially folded. However, selfies can also be taken from the cover screen.

The Galaxy Z Fold has a 7.6-inch 120Hz AMOLED display that opens like a book and a 6.2-inch AMOLED display when closed. The camera has three lenses: a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 30x space zoom. There's also a 10-megapixel selfie camera and a 4-megapixel under-display camera. The main camera has a 23 percent brighter sensor and improved processing power for better images.

The Z Fold 4 is the first smartphone to ship with AndroidL, a version of Android designed for large screens. There's a new taskbar designed to make multitasking easier and more intuitive. Samsung has partnered with Google and Microsoft to develop apps that make better use of screen space. Both devices feature Gorilla Glass Victus and Samsung's Armor Aluminum frames for durability. Inside, the two smartphones have 5G connectivity and are equipped with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chips that can reach speeds of up to 3.2GHz, as well as high-capacity batteries that support fast charging and Wireless PowerShare for charging other Qi-based accessories. Other features include IPX8 water resistance, WiFi 6E support, up to 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, and Android 12 support.

Samsung updates accessories

The price for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 starts at $1,000 while the price for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is $1,800. Pre-orders are available starting today and customers who pre-order one of Samsung's new foldable smartphones will receive a free storage upgrade to double the storage space. In addition to the two foldable smartphones quit Samsung also introduced the updated $230 Galaxy Buds 2 Pro with HiFi 24-bit audio, a smaller design and improved active noise cancellation, as well as the new Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.
