Apple is reportedly working on a new mixed reality headset, which is expected to be announced later this year. There have been many rumors about this product, and now there's new evidence of its existence—and it comes from Apple itself. Open source code, which the company itself has made available, now points to the "realityOS" platform.
As a user on Twitter announcedApple today updated its source code available to developers on GitHub. Interestingly, the company's latest open source code mentions "realityOS" and "Reality Simulator," along with existing platforms like iOS, macOS, and watchOS. The US blog 9to5Mac can independently confirm the mention of realityOS, Reality Simulator and “Wolf” (the code name of the platform) in Apple’s open source code.
realityOS has been found several times in Apple's code
As a reminder, realityOS is the possible name of the operating system running on Apple's mixed reality headset. The name has already been mentioned in the App Store Logs, another tool Apple provides for developers. The company has also filed a 2021 trademark application for realityOS with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). However, Bloomberg reported that Apple has settled on "xrOS" as the platform name for its new headset. The name is said to be a reference to "augmented reality," which also makes sense given the integration of AR and VR. Apple has also filed trademarks such as "Reality One," "Reality Pro," and "Reality Processor."
Mixed Reality Headset: What the Rumor Mill Says
The first version of the headset is set to be unveiled at WWDC 2023 in June and will launch later in the year. It will feature two high-resolution micro-OLED displays (one for each eye), as well as dozens of integrated cameras and sensors for hand and eye control, all powered by the M2 chip. Due to the high-quality hardware, the headset is expected to cost around $3,000, although Apple is already working on a cheaper version for the future. According to The Information, Apple plans to halve the price to around $1,500. (Photo by Anton_Medvedev / Bigstockphoto)
