Project Clips is a feature that allows the use of certain third-party app content without installing the respective application.

The US blog 9to5mac has been able to acquire an early version of iOS 14. More and more details about upcoming features are gradually coming to light. The latest discovery includes Project “Clips”. The blog:

Today, when you open a link or scan a QR code from an app you don't have installed on your iPhone or iPad, that link will open in Safari. Apps can provide universal links that open the app instead of Safari if the application is installed. But that could change in the near future with a new API, known internally as "Clips," found in the iOS 14 code.

According to the report, the new interface should be able to run certain parts of an app without installation. This means that users can access certain dynamic or interactive content provided by developers. 9to5mac explains the whole thing using an example:

On Android, the feature is called “Slices”

Let's say you receive a QR code with a link to a video from YouTube, but you don't have the official application installed on your iPhone. With iOS 14 and the Clips API, you can scan that code and the video will play on a floating card that shows a native UI instead of a web page.

This means that a certain part of the app is downloaded over the air and then played. The developers themselves decide which segments are made available for "clips". According to the iOS 14 code, Apple is testing the function with applications such as OpenTable, Yelp, DoorDash, Sony's PS4 Second Screen App and YouTube. By the way, the function is actually not that new. Android is pursuing a similar feature with "slices". Whether "clips" will ultimately be implemented remains to be seen - after all, this iOS 14 version is a very early build. Apple may be planning the feature as part of the WWDC 2020 imagine – let us be surprised. (Photo by manae / Bigstockphoto)
