Disney+ password sharing

A major change is coming to the world of streaming services. Disney+, the popular streaming service known for its extensive offering of Disney classics, Pixar films, Star Wars series and Marvel blockbusters, is about to introduce a new policy that will prevent password sharing. This change, which is set to take effect in June, could be a significant adjustment for many users.

In conversation with CNBC explained Disney CEO Bob Iger explained the reasons behind this decision. It's about turning the streaming business into a growth area. A key step in this is to curb the sharing of passwords across different households in order to encourage users to create their own accounts. This measure will initially be tested in selected countries and markets before being rolled out worldwide in September. The exact launch countries have not yet been announced, which is causing speculation.

The impact of the end of password sharing

This new policy could have far-reaching consequences for Disney+ subscribers. The move follows the example of Netflix, a direct competitor and, according to Iger, the "gold standard in streaming." Netflix already began eliminating password sharing in 2023 and has seen significant subscriber growth as a result, suggesting that Disney+ has similar goals with this change.

What does this mean for existing users?

For existing users, this could mean having to opt for individual subscriptions in the near future to continue to have access to their favorite shows and movies. This could particularly affect families and friends who have previously shared an account.

The development of Disney+

Disney+ has experienced a remarkable rise since its launch in 2019, becoming the second-largest streaming service after Netflix with over 110 million subscribers worldwide. Despite initial financial losses, Disney+ is on the verge of experiencing its first profitable quarter under Iger's leadership. The introduction of the new password policy is another step to ensure the long-term growth and profitability of the service.

Disney+ pricing models

Disney+ currently offers three subscription models: an ad-free subscription (standard) for 8.99 euros per month and a premium subscription for 11.99 per month. There is also a subscription priced at 5.99 euros per month that includes advertising. By integrating Hulu content, Disney+ has also tried to increase customer loyalty and make its offering more attractive.

Maximizing User Value: Disney+'s End of Password Sharing

Disney+'s decision to ban password sharing marks a turning point in the streaming industry. While this measure may seem like a restriction at first glance, it aims to ensure sustainable growth and better quality of service. For subscribers, this means that they may have to adapt their usage habits to continue to have access to their favorite content. This move reflects Disney+'s efforts to compete in a highly competitive market and maximize the value of its offering for all users. (Photo by yalcin.sonat / Bigstockphoto)
