Apple has released an updated version of its iMovie software with important new features designed to make it easier to create movies and videos on iPhone and iPad.

The iMovie 3.0 update, available today, includes two new features designed to help aspiring creators, students, and others create great video content. Apple says it's the biggest update to iPhone and iPad. One of the new features is the integration of Storyboards, which replaces the blank timeline with 20 different "storyboard" templates that give users a head start. The templates range from cooking tutorials to news reports. Each Storyboard includes a short list that arranges clips to tell a specific story. The Storyboards include placeholders with descriptive previews, as well as suggestions for shooting your own clips. Users can add, reorder, and delete shots in a Storyboard. They can also bring their own style to the Storyboards by using different titles, transitions, fonts, filters, and more.

iMovie 3.0: New features require iOS 15.2 or higher

The music added to the tracks is dynamically adjusted to the length of the project. Users also have control over split, trim, and volume. Apple is also adding the new Magic Movie feature, which lets you automatically create custom videos with just a few taps. Similar to the Memories feature in Photos, users simply select an album or group of pictures or videos and Magic Movie recognizes the best parts and creates a project. Like storyboards, these Magic Movies are customizable. Users can apply different styles. The new features are being introduced exclusively for iPhone and iPad, meaning they will not be carried over to the macOS version of iMovie, at least not at this time. Both new features are available on iPhone and iPad devices that support iOS 15.2 or later. iMovie 3.0 can currently in the App Store can be downloaded. (Image: Apple)
