macOS 11.4 Beta fixes SSD issues on M1 Macs

Previous issues with reporting tools reporting severe wear on SSDs in Apple Silicon Macs now appear to be fixed in the latest beta of macOS.

Solid state drives (SSDs) can only be written to so many times before they become unusable. But that takes many years. However, a series of reports in February 2021 about the SSDs in M1 Macs seemed to show that their lifespan was significantly reduced. At the time, one source claimed that it was a data reporting error within the tools used to report SSD wear.

When will macOS 11.4 be released to all users?

According to this source, it was not believed that there was an actual hardware problem with the SSD, nor were the SSDs aging significantly faster than before due to RAM swapping or other reasons. Now an anonymous source has told AppleInsider explainedthat the problem has been fixed in the latest beta of macOS. In the course of this, the US blog confirmed that the problem no longer occurs in macOS 11.4 Beta 2. Regardless of this, users on Twitter, including one of the developers working on the Linux port to Apple Silicon, have also reported that the problem has been fixed. When macOS 11.4 will be released to all users remains to be seen. However, it is expected that the version will be made available within the next month. (Photo by Unsplash / Joey Banks)
