iOS 26.6 Release Candidate: The final version is imminent

Apple has released the Release Candidate of iOS 26.6. iPadOS 26.6, macOS 26.6 ("Tahoe"), watchOS 26.6, tvOS 26.6, and visionOS 26.6 are also available as Release Candidates. The Release Candidate is generally the final version, which will be released to all users in a few days.

With the release candidate, the unusually late testing phase of iOS 26.6 comes to an end. After Apple recently switched to a weekly build cycle, the version the company considers ready for release is now available. The RC is functionally identical to the final update – provided no serious bugs are discovered, this exact build will be delivered to all users. iOS 26.6 remains a maintenance update, keeping iOS 26 stable while development of iOS 27 continues in parallel.

What is a release candidate?

A Release Candidate (RC) is the final test version before public release. Apple makes the RC available to both registered developers and participants in the public beta program. The build typically corresponds exactly to the final version, which is then distributed to all users via Software Update. Apple only releases a second RC in the event of serious, newly discovered problems.

What iOS 26.6 brings overall

iOS 26.6 is one of the most inconspicuous updates of the current system generation. Major new features are deliberately omitted – the focus is on bug fixes, security patches, and performance improvements. The only noteworthy visible change comes from the first beta: a warning message when the limit of blocked contacts is reached, indicating that an existing entry must first be removed. Otherwise, this version primarily serves to keep iOS 26 stable and secure before the major generational change.

When will the final version be released?

After the release of a Release Candidate, it typically only takes a few days for the final release. iOS 26.6 is expected towards the end of July – most likely at the beginning of next week. The update will then be available for all compatible devices via "Settings > General > Software Update".

Overview of the other systems

Alongside iOS 26.6 RC, Apple also released the release candidates for the other systems:

iPadOS 26.6 includes the same maintenance as iOS 26.6. macOS 26.6 ("Tahoe") is also nearing release. watchOS 26.6, tvOS 26.6, and visionOS 26.6 are receiving their final optimizations.

We will report on this separately as soon as the final versions are officially released.

iOS 26.6: Here's what's next

With the release of the Release Candidate, the end of the iOS 26.6 testing phase is imminent. The final version should be released to all users in the coming days – and thus the last maintenance update for iOS 26 before the actual generational change with iOS 27 this fall. (Image: Apfelpatient)
