Apple has released the second beta version of iOS 26.1. iPadOS 26.1, macOS 26.1 ("Tahoe"), watchOS 26.1, tvOS 26.1, and visionOS 26.1 are also available for developers to download. The new builds can be installed as usual via the Apple Developer Program. With Beta 2, Apple continues to fine-tune its latest operating systems and is working on several new features and technical adjustments.

One focus of iOS 26.1 is language support. Apple Intelligence receives eight new languages: Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Traditional Chinese, and Vietnamese. This expands Apple's AI capabilities to additional regions. AirPods Live Translation is also being expanded. In addition to the already supported languages, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese can now also be translated in both simplified and traditional script. This should provide a noticeable advantage, especially when traveling or in international conversations. However, the feature remains blocked in the European Union for the time being, as legal issues are still pending.

Detailed improvements in system apps

Several system apps have received small but useful changes. The number pad in the Phone app now uses the new Liquid Glass design, providing greater clarity and a more modern appearance. Apple Music allows you to quickly switch between songs by swiping over the track. In the Photos app, the slider for videos has been made more precise, and the navigation bar has been adjusted. The Calendar now highlights events from different calendars in color in some views, improving clarity. Safari has also been redesigned: The tab bar at the bottom is wider, simplifying operation.

Security strategy with background updates

With iOS 26.1, Apple is implementing a new security concept. Under the name Background Security Improvements, important patches will be installed automatically in the background. Users no longer need to actively intervene, as was previously the case with Rapid Security Responses. In addition, Apple is working on updating individual system components independently of reboots. This will bring security updates closer to real-time protection and close vulnerabilities more quickly.

Notes from the beta code

In addition to the visible new features, the iOS 26.1 code contains hints of other potential features. Whether they will make it into the final version remains to be seen.

  • MCP Integration: Apple is apparently testing support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This would allow AI agents like ChatGPT or Claude to interact directly with app functions and execute system-wide actions.
  • Image Playground: The image generation app is being prepared for third-party models. So far, only OpenAI's ChatGPT has been integrated, but other providers may follow in the future.
  • New security features: Code references suggest that Apple could enable security updates in the future without a reboot.
  • Notification Forwarding: A feature for forwarding notifications to third-party accessories has been discovered. Combined with a new framework called "AccessoryExtension," this could be a step toward greater openness to smartwatches from other brands.

iOS 26.1: A mix of new features and refinements

The second beta shows that Apple sees iOS 26.1 not just as a maintenance update, but also as an enhancement for international markets and device security. While the new languages for Apple Intelligence and AirPods have already been integrated, the hints discovered in the code remain unconfirmed. Some of them may only appear in later versions. iOS 26.1 is still in active testing. Public beta versions are expected soon. The final release is expected in a few weeks, as usual. Until then, further changes and optimizations will appear, which will be documented separately.
