With the introduction of iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia (macOS 15), Apple is once again setting new standards in the area of data protection and security. One of the most notable new features is the "Rotate WiFi address" option, which aims to further minimize the tracking of your devices. Find out below how this new feature works and why it represents a significant step forward for your privacy.

Data protection is a key concern in today's digital world. Companies and users are constantly on the lookout for new methods to protect personal data and prevent tracking. Apple has established itself as a pioneer in data protection in recent years and is setting new standards with iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. The introduction of the "Rotate WiFi address" option is another step in this direction.

What is the rotating Wi-Fi address?

With iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, Apple has replaced the previous "Private WiFi address" function with the "Rotate WiFi address" option. This new setting is available in your device's WiFi settings and ensures that your WiFi address is changed at random times.

Why is this important?

Devices are often tracked via the WiFi address, also known as the MAC address. If your WiFi address remains static, other devices and people using the same network can track your activity more easily. The rotating WiFi address makes this much more difficult by changing your WiFi address at different times, making your device less susceptible to tracking.

How does the rotating WiFi address work?

As soon as you activate the "Rotate WiFi address" option in the settings, your device automatically changes its WiFi address at irregular intervals. These random changes make it more difficult for trackers to monitor your movements and connections.

Comparison with the "Private WiFi address"

The previous setting "Private WiFi address" assigned a different MAC address to your device for each WiFi network it was connected to. Although this already offered a high level of data protection, the rotating WiFi address goes one step further. It not only changes the address for each network, but also within the same network at random times.

Independence from "Restrict IP address tracking"

It is important to know that the "Rotate WiFi address" option is independent of the "Restrict IP address tracking" function, which can be activated for Mail and Safari. These two data protection functions complement each other and together offer comprehensive protection against tracking.

Advantages for the user

  • Increased data protection: Your online activities are more difficult to track.
  • Easy to activate: The setting can be activated quickly and easily in your device's WiFi settings.
  • Additional security: In combination with other Apple privacy features, it provides a robust shield against tracking.

iOS 18: How the rotating WiFi address strengthens your privacy

The introduction of the rotating WiFi address in iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia is another significant step by Apple to protect your privacy. By regularly changing your WiFi address, it becomes almost impossible for trackers to monitor your activity. Enable this feature in your WiFi settings and enjoy the extra protection it provides. Data protection has never been so simple and effective. Looking for new accessories?
