Not only does Apple finally support Face ID in landscape mode on iPhones, but it will now also push standalone security improvements to iOS 16 devices between standard software updates.
This new update Allows Apple to close known security vulnerabilities even faster. This is important for fixing bugs discovered shortly after an update. Theoretically, this allows a security update to be distributed to iOS devices between "point" updates, reducing the workload for Apple's codebase maintainers. Additionally, Face ID in iOS 16 will work in landscape mode on supported iPhone models.
iOS 16 increases security
Currently, users have to hold the iPhone in portrait mode to unlock their phone with Face ID. However, Apple does not specify which models this applies to. Both iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models support the feature. Apple has announced further security updates, including Safety Check, a feature that allows victims to disconnect potentially dangerous connections with perpetrators. Users can remotely disable messaging on secondary devices, turn off location tracking, and much more. Whether your device is compatible with the new software, you can find out here.
